Overall, the sound here supports, rather than enhances, the content on screen. It all sounds fine on the 5.1, but there's nothing here that you'd want to show off to your friends. Just a lot of talking, fighting, moaning and groaning. No action, no alt-rock soundtrack, no gimmicky effects work. Score: 7 out of 10 Languages and Extras This isn't really a surround-sound kind of show. We'd prefer to see McNamara/Troy in stunning high/definition. Certainly not bad looking - but sporting some noticeable grain and a slightly muted coloration - a few tweaks - a lift here, a tuck there - could definitely help this transfer. Overall, this fourth season of the popular series is a step up from the misstep of last and the closing moments promise an invigorating - and incredibly logical - change of locale for the upcoming fifth season. Bissett, of course, is still incredibly sexy for her age - and despite a few well-played exchanges with Christian throughout the season - she's given little to do but play the sexed-up, Nip/Tuck version of Hannibal Lecter (if he stole the organs, rather than ate them). As if the show feels the need to offer some twisted, season-long through-line, it grabs at the air and pulls out Jacqueline Bissett as the head of a brothel whose escorts take more than just your money. The organ smuggling plotline is to this season what the Carver mystery was to seasons one and two and ultimately feels like something of a narrative reach. Julia, though, is given the more interesting of the two as she begins to fall for the new nanny - played by the ever-brilliant Peter Dinklage -resulting in some truly inspired performances. The effect of a deformed baby into Sean's marriage to Julia leads to dual plots about potential affairs.
The deep friendship between Christian and Sean - the slash, if you will, in McNamra/Troy - is examined to dramatic and often moving results. The recipe is not entirely without substance.
Rather, you wait for the signs that other people do and then drop the slyly-placed laugh which says, "Yeah, I saw that episode, too." And why would it be otherwise when the show's fourth season further perfects the art of the late-night soap by incorporating organ smuggling plots into a healthy mix of stories about escorts, midgets, rednecks, sex addicts, lesbians, deformed babies, murders and love affairs (both physical and emotional)? Toss in a list of guest stars including Rosie O'Donnell, Alanis Morissette, Larry Hagman Jacqueline Bissett and Brooke Shields and viewers can expect the level of sexual and moral debauchery to which this gloriously-sleazy show has always aspired.īut what makes the thing so damn complicated is the fact that there's real drama here, as well. In public company, you don't freely admit to watching it. That show is Nip/Tuck - quite possibly the most absurd, sexy, dirty, melodramatic, out-there, self-aware-but-played-for-straight drama currently airing on television today. There is, however, one show whose appreciation people communicate in subtle, confused, "me too" glances - and it's possible to join the water-cooler fan-club with only a wink and nod.

Pretty much anything can be justified on some level - and in TV landscape so full of quality programming, supported by a media which so publicly bridges the gap between fans, there's no longer any hesitation to proudly proclaim one's enjoyment of anything from Battlestar to Desperate Housewives. For the most part, there are very few guilty pleasures left on television these days.
